Firm Defeats Election Challenge to Georgia Senate Campaign

The firm successfully defended Dr. Kay Kirkpatrick, the leading candidate for State Senate District 32, in connection with a challenge to her campaign based on an allegation that she was running under a name other than her legal name. (Dr. Kirkpatrick previously practiced medicine using her married name, Kay Kirkpatrick Haltom, but she filed her campaign papers using her maiden name.) As firm partner Vincent Russo explained in a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the “plain language of the law is clear that Dr. Kirkpatrick is qualified to be a candidate within the voter registration rules,” describing the challenge as “nothing more than political gamesmanship.” The Cobb County Board of Elections swiftly dismissed the complaint against Dr. Kirkpatrick following a closed session that lasted approximately five minutes.
